S.A.L.T. is a program that cultivates the leadershipemployment- Readiness, and civic engagement of youth in the greater Tacoma community.

Some of the multitude of activities provided in the S.A.L.T. program include:

  • Logo Design and Screen Printing Workshop
  • Guest lectures by elected officials, skate industry pros, local business owners, community organizers, AND MORE!
  • Skate park revitalization
  • Skate park design, maintenance and fabrication
  • Skate trip around Washington state

This program is an innovative opportunity for youth to learn and grow through skateboarding. Harnessing the youth population’s passion for skateboarding, this program engages participants in activities in which they might not otherwise be exposed to. Often the voice of youth skateboarders is not sought after or heard in the community. This program connects youth with community leaders and government officials, provides opportunities to share voice, build employment and social skills which benefit youth long after program completion, and inspires a sense of self-worth and confidence that will drive youth to realize continued personal success.

FOSS CLean & S.A.L.T. Skate Trip

The '15-'16 S.A.L.T. cohort worked very hard w/ Metro Parks to be given the opportunity to give a little TLC to a beloved local skatepark: Heidelberg aka "FOSS". As a reward for their hard work we took a tour of 6 skateparks in the Tacoma/Seattle area and documented the trip. The video below was shot by Robert Boyle and edited by S.A.L.T. alumni Bailey Walker. As part of the trip the team created a "Skatepark Quality Questionnaire" to rate each park we attended. The results are still being finalized and will be shared here with the goal being to create a master list of all skateparks in the PNW and their relative strenghts and weaknesses!
